Dr. Cornelius Döhmen, a reproductive medicine specialist, and Dr. Thilo Gröning, a gynecologist, recently co-authored an article on the topic “Pregnancy After Age 50 in Gynecological Practice.”  

Pregnancies after age 50 are rare, but requests for counseling are becoming increasingly common in gynecological practices. This is due to assisted reproduction, the cryopreservation of eggs or embryos, and egg donation. The practice serves as a point of contact and provides support in areas such as medical risks, care, and legal clarification. 

Before pregnancy, various health factors should be assessed; once pregnancy has occurred, prenatal medical care, monitoring, and timely birth planning are important.

Counseling should respect the pregnant woman’s autonomy, clearly identify risks, and distinguish between providing factual information and permissible prenatal care on the one hand, and egg donation - which is prohibited in Germany - on the other.
